What is Pana Sankranti?
Maha Vishuba Sankranti, known as Pana Sankranti or Vishuba Sankranti, is the traditional new year of the Odia people. On this day, the Odia people offer devotion to temples, particularly to Hanuman, since it is also the birthday of Lord Hanuman. On April 13, this year, Pana Sankranti will be celebrated with utmost glories. A sweet drink called “Pana” is prepared and shared by people across Odisha, particularly in rural areas, to celebrate this auspicious day. It is a time for renewal, new beginnings, and togetherness.

The ingredients for this drink include water, sugar, fruits, pulp from wood apples (Bela), and coconut. Families and friends gather together to drink Pana, this drink has cooling properties and soothe the consumer.
The major attraction
An earthen pot is filled with the sweet drink called “Pana”, then the pot is hung over a Tulsi or Brundabati (Basil) plant on this day. The Pana is added to this pot by creating a hole in the base. The special bhog called chhatua is prepared to offer the Brundabati, after that all family members eat that bhog.
